  • Wout Berger (Ridderkerk, 1941) introduceerde binnen de hedendaagse kunst een aantal formele, stilistische en inhoudelijke innovaties, die hun oorsprong vonden in zijn fascinatie voor de fotografische techniek: hij maakte gebruik van de technische camera, koos voor buitengewoon hoge standpunten en was een van de eerste fotografen in Nederland die zich specialiseerde in het zelf vervaardigen van kleurenafdrukken.

Wout Berger (Ridderkerk, 1941) introduceerde binnen de hedendaagse kunst een aantal formele, stilistische en inhoudelijke innovaties, die hun oorsprong vonden in zijn fascinatie voor de fotografische techniek: hij maakte gebruik van de technische camera, koos voor buitengewoon hoge standpunten en was een van de eerste fotografen in Nederland die zich specialiseerde in het zelf vervaardigen van kleurenafdrukken. Zijn werk is van grote invloed op de ontwikkeling van ‘topografische’ landschapsfotografie in Nederland: een registrerende en afstandelijke stijl van fotograferen met een inhoudelijke interesse voor het door de mens veranderende landschap. De natuur vormt een rode draad in zijn oeuvre. Door landschappen scherper af te beelden dan het oog kan waarnemen en ijkpunten en schaalreferenties weg te laten, abstraheert Berger het landschap en laat hij de toeschouwer verder kijken dan het oppervlak.
 
In contemporary art Wout Berger (Ridderkerk, 1941) introduced a number of formal, stylistic, and conceptual innovations, originating in his fascination for photography techniques: he used the view camera, chose extremely high viewpoints for his images, and was one of the first photographers in The Netherlands to specialize in developing color prints. His  work has been highly influential in the development of ‘topographic’ landscape photography in The Netherlands: a registering, detached style of photography with a conceptual interest in the man-driven change of the landscape. Nature forms the recurring theme within his work. By registering landscapes in a higher resolution than the eye can observe while leaving out scale references, Berger creates an abstract image of the landscape, inviting the viewer to  look beyond the surface.
