ESTRANGED toont LHBT+ jongeren op zoek naar hun individualiteit. Ze bewegen zich in een samenleving waarin ze moeite hebben zich vrij te kunnen uiten en zichzelf te kunnen zijn. Alhoewel de geportretteerden opvallen in het beeld, staan ze gedeeltelijk in de achtergrond. Net als in het dagelijks leven laten ze een deel van zichzelf zien, maar houden ze ook een stuk verborgen.

ESTRANGED shows LGBT+ young people in search of their individuality. They move in a society where they struggle to express themselves freely and be themselves. Although the people portrayed stand out in the image, they are partly in the background. As in everyday life, they show part of themselves, but also keep a piece hidden.

OVER DE KUNSTENAAR / ABOUT THE ARTIST

​In de fotografie van Arjan Spannenburg (Texel, 1978) staat de zoektocht naar identiteit en zelfexpressie centraal. In krachtige composities, meestal in zwartwit, portretteert Spannenburg jongens die op de drempel van volwassenheid staan. We zien adolescenten in een onzekere tijd van hun leven, op zoek naar hun eigen identiteit. Het levert gevoelige portretten op van jongens die alleen zijn met hun gedachten. Tegelijk lijken de geportretteerden een sterke behoefte te hebben aan communicatie met de buitenwereld, op zoek naar steun, begrip, liefde. Soms levert deze zoektocht rauwe beelden op, die echter niet bedoelt zijn om te shockeren. Juist deze foto’s geven feilloos weer hoe zelfexpressie gepaard gaat met kwetsbaarheid. Hoewel Spannenburg zijn eigen ‘coming of age’ als een autobiografisch uitgangspunt neemt, overstijgt zijn werk zowel zijn persoonlijke verhaal als dat van de jongens die hij portretteert. De foto’s verbeelden universele gevoelens van eenzaamheid, kwetsbaarheid en onzekerheid en vangen de poëtische schoonheid van adolescentie.

The photography of Arjan Spannenburg (Texel, 1978) is centered around the search for identity and self-expression. In powerful compositions, mostly in black-and-white, Spannenburg portrays boys on the threshold of adulthood. We see adolescents at an uncertain time in their lives, searching for their own individuality. This results in fragile, loving portraits of boys lost in their own thoughts. At the same time, the boys portrayed seem to have a strong need to communicate with the outside world, in search of support, understanding, and love. Sometimes this search results in raw images, but these are never intended to shock or provoke. Rather, these photographs invite the viewer to reflect on the relationship between vulnerability and self-expression. Although Spannenburg takes his own coming of age as an autobiographical starting point, his work transcends both his own personal story and that of the boys he portrays. The photographs represent universal feelings of loneliness, vulnerability, and insecurity, while capturing the poetic beauty of adolescence.
