Aarde. Groei. Bevruchting. Het woord soil, bodem, roept talloze connotaties op die ieder weer iets anders duiden over de natuur en onze relatie ertoe. De werken in deze tentoonstelling geven de natuur weer en bevragen tegelijkertijd de manier waarop wij haar verbeelden en ons tot haar verhouden; en daarmee tot onszelf.

Earth. Growth. Fertilization. The word soil conjures up numerous connotations that each say something about nature and our relationship to it. The works in this exhibition celebrate nature and simultaneously question the way we depict it and associate ourselves with it; thereby showing how we perceive ourselves.

OVER DE KUNSTENAARS / ABOUT THE ARTISTS

Wout Berger introduceerde binnen de hedendaagse kunst een aantal formele, stilistische en inhoudelijke innovaties, die hun oorsprong vonden in zijn fascinatie voor de fotografische techniek: hij maakte gebruik van de technische camera, koos voor buitengewoon hoge standpunten en was een van de eerste fotografen in Nederland die zich specialiseerde in het zelf vervaardigen van kleurenafdrukken.

Saskia Boelsums werd geboren in Nederland en groeide op in Iran en Curaçao. Terug in Nederland studeerde ze aan de Minerva in Groningen, waar ze afstudeerde in ruimtelijke en grafische vormgeving. Sinds 2013 richt ze zich volledig op fotografie en heeft ze een groot aantal nominaties en prijzen ontvangen. Saskia Boelsums is tevens kunstenaar van het jaar 2020.

Rob Buelens reflecteert in zijn werk op de menselijke natuur. Zijn wonderlijke, verfijnde maquettes en sculpturen verkennen typisch menselijke verlangens, fixaties, en groepsdynamieken.

Noor Damen verheft in haar werk het alledaagse tot iets buitengewoons; een tak, algen en een patroon van gegroeid zeewier vormen de basis voor foto’s waarin de schoonheid van deze doodgewone, dagelijkse dingen wordt getoond. 

Margriet Smulders staat bekend om haar bijzondere fotografische bloemstillevens. Geïnspireerd door Nederlandse stillevens uit de zeventiende eeuw, begon ze in 2000 met het maken van geënsceneerde ‘bloemportretten’. In grote spiegelbakken creëert Smulders composities van weldadige bloemen, soepel vallende stoffen, kronkelig glaswerk, water en inkt.

Hans Withoos is gefascineerd door schoonheid in al haar aspecten: de schoonheid van het drama, van het lichaam en het licht, en de schoonheid van het lijden. De fotografie van Hans Withoos speelt zich af in een wereld van overvloed en gekunsteldheid, die hinten naar decadentie. Het is een wereld die tegelijkertijd vreemd en vertrouwd is. De figuren in zijn beelden worden archetypes, die de toeschouwer een gevoel van vervreemding geven. Zijn werk is gelaagd, met zorgvuldig in scène gezette beelden en een idiosyncratische esthetiek. Sommige beelden roepen emoties op, zoals lijden, sensualiteit en beklemming; andere zijn dan weer ontdaan van elke emotie.
