MAURICE NIO

  • M.H.L. (Maurice) Nio (Dabo Singkep (Riau-archipel), 3 november 1959 – Rotterdam, 11 juli 2023) was een Nederlands architect, schrijver en kunstenaar.
  • In 1988 als architect cum laude afgestudeerd aan de Faculteit Bouwkunde van de TU Delft op een villa voor Michael Jackson, het curieuste afstudeerproject van dat jaar. Dit project is cruciaal geweest voor zijn hybride aanpak.
  • Nio had vanaf het jaar 2000 een eigen ontwerpbureau, Nio architecten in Rotterdam, vanaf 2004 met Joan Almekinders. Samen met architect Lars Spuybroek gaf Nio van 1991 tot 1994 het tijdschrift in boekvorm Nox uit, waarvan vier delen uitkwamen.

For the ten masks, I was first inspired by simple universal signs and symbols, as well as specific letters from the Greek alphabet and Cyrillic script. So, the masks are not designed from a character's point of view. Now I am actually curious which character belongs to each mask, or by which specific emotions (or affects) these 10 masks are drawn and driven.

In order to find out, I consulted Spinoza's Ethics (1678) again, especially Part Three: "De Origine et Natura Affectuum - On the Origin and Nature of Emotions" in which he unfolds and defines the 48 emotions in a brilliantly geometric way.

With most of the 10 masks, I had no doubt which emotion, from Spinoza's list, corresponds to which mask. No doubt at all, except with the ж Mask, which is so unfathomable and ambivalent that finding a clearly associated emotion is difficult. After a daylong peering at the thing, the true nature of the mask emerged. In Latin, the affect is called ‘’ambitio’’ (no. 44), which is normally translated with ‘’ambition’’ in English and ‘’eerzucht’’ in Dutch. The Dutch word ‘’eerzucht’’ covers the ambivalent connotation very well and should be translated as something like ‘’sigh for honor’’, because precisely in the sigh for honor lies the crux, precisely there lies the possible turning point from a beautiful pure striving for honor to a dark toxic lust for success, precisely in that lust to always do the right thing - and more than the right thing, a kind of ‘’the right thing’’ squared - lies the danger of the turning point. It does not have to actually take place, this emotional revolution, but the imminent presence of it alone is agonizing and often the beginning of frustration.

I can relate to all masks very well, but the ж Mask is the one I relate to the most.

SELECTIE ONTWERPEN

Viaducten, tunnels en bushaltes voor Zuidtangent (NH) op het 'kerntraject' Schiphol-Haarlem, 2002.
Busstation The Amazing Whale Jaw, piepschuim met een buitenlaag van polyester, in Hoofddorp, bij het Spaarne Ziekenhuis, 2002. Plaatselijk is het ook bekend als de Zwerfkei. Dit wordt beschouwd als het grootste bouwwerk ter wereld dat geheel uit kunststof materialen is opgebouwd. De gemeente Haarlemmermeer kondigde in 2022 aan dit kunstwerk, dat duur is in onderhoud, te willen verwijderen.
Ophaalbrug, Prayer of Shadow Protection, over het Amstel-Drechtkanaal in Vrouwenakker, 2008. Hiervoor wonnen Nio en Sean Matsumoto in 2010 de Dutch Design Award voor 'beste product openbare ruimte'.
